Hola Amigos!!
Now that holiday is here I have had a lot of time to spend reading! Here is a quick fact about me: I love to read. I have been wanting to read 'The Book Thief' by Markus Zusak for so long and so I picked it up from my schools library- personally I think that libraries are highly under-rated!! It is a really long story but it is one that will not bore you at all and is guaranteed to leave tears in your eyes!!
*Warning: Spoilers!(But not too many!!)*
I won't go into too much detail about the book so I don't spoil it completely if you want to read it (and you should haha!)
I had seen the film trailer which was out last year for this novel and it really caught my eye! This novel is narrated by death which I think gives a fantastic change to the way the story is told! It is about a little girl called 'Liesel Meminger' and her struggle through Nazi Germany with her foster parents Rosa Hubermann and Hans Hubermann, who she comes to adore. Liesel has an absolute love for books, so much so that she starts to steal them-hence the name of the book! Her father, Hans, can play the accordion and Liesel loves his playing and forms a strong bond with the accordion player. Her best friend is called 'Rudy Steiner' and their relationship is a very cute one. He is a very funny character in the novel! They both secretly love each other and one of my favourite lines of Rudy's is :
'How about a kiss, Saumensch?' To which Liesel's reply is always no- Saumensch being a friendly insult. The reactions from both characters make these parts of the book quite funny to read!
(It's only at the end where Liesel actually gives Rudy his wish but you will have to read it to find out what happens! I only warn you to have some tissues prepared)
The plot twists when Liesel's family take in a Jew to hide in the basement- his name is Max. Leisel and him become great friends and as a present he makes her a little book written by himself with illustrations! He is sadly sent away after Hans becomes a suspicion to the authorities and Liesel constantly thinks about Max and fears for his life.
The plot carries on but I won't reveal the end and I have missed sooo much out!! So all I can say to you is to purchase this fantastic novel and a box of tissues because it is definitely worth your time to read. It offers a fantastic story that leaves you laughing one minute, crying the next! It is a truly beautiful Novel that I will no doubly be reading again and again!
If you have read this fantastic book- what did you think??
Speak soon!
